Drawings

Canberra built environment drawings:

These drawings are a sample of works which were completed in 2003.  I depicted various large buildings usually lined up on a horizon line, in and around the centre of the picture plane . Scale was an important component in these works and the landscape is devoid of people. The environment is depicted as quite alien and unfriendly. This is achieved by the use of vast spaces contained within the picture plane giving the impression that the buildings are huge, dominant and overpowering. Some have tiny doorways or windows.- others none. They are sometimes ‘paired up’ and in groups – others stand alone. I completed a series of these works and when displayed together the buildings appear to ‘converse’ with each other. The works were greatly influenced by my return to living in Canberra. The vast spaces – particularly since the recent bushfires, areas of the city devoid of people, and the tree plantings in rows and circles all create a surreal unnatural looking and often alien environment.
